Lunges are a great exercise to assist with functionally preparing your body for the everyday activities of life like walking and climbing stairs.
The forward lunge is great and you can revisit this exercise here. The forward lunge mimics our walking pattern thus reinforcing this pattern in a way that challenges balance and the muscles of the lower body.
This week’s #FridayFitness is all about the step back lunge, also known as the reverse lunge. The step back lunge offers our bodies an opportunity to move in a direction that most of us do not spend much time travelling in, offering us a new challenge, and for kids often a new skill to learn.
Both types of lunges are great exercises for balance, muscle strengthening, core control and engagement. In addition they work and stretch the hip flexors which are a vital group of muscles around the upper and inner thighs and pelvic region that help power nearly every movement we perform.
Have fun incorporating the step back lunges into your daily life this week – we look forward to hearing your progress and how you and the kids enjoyed practising them.
We’d love you to share your own videos / photo’s doing this with the kids, please hashtag #FridayFitness when you post it on social media. Feel free to tag us in or post directly onto our Facebook Page!
